Training Documents - Community Norms
Our primary commitment is to learn and achieve understanding from discussion facilitators, from each other, from materials, and from our work. We acknowledge that racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, classism, heterosexism, and other forms of oppression exist. The Dismantling Racism Training team has established community norms to support these conversations and our learning. You can find the community norms for our training here. Participants are asked to read pages 1 through 3 prior to your training day.
Dismantling Racism Training
The 193rd Convention of the Diocese of Kentucky created the Racial Healing Commission and prioritized the work of anti- racism training as required for all ordained persons, professional staff, and those elected or appointed to committees, commissions, agencies, task forces, and boards in accordance with Resolution 2000-B049 of The General Convention.
A Word from Bishop White on the importance of Dismantling Racism Training:
In March of 2020 a group of seven lay and ordained persons worked for nine months with Dr. Catherine Meeks of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing in Atlanta to develop and train to facilitate this anti-racism program in the Diocese of Kentucky. The first trainings were offered in January 2021.
This video, presented by Angie Mills of St. John’s Murray, the convenor of the anti-racism trainers, provides an introduction to the work:
After persons complete the training, they receive a certificate from the diocese and are listed as having fulfilled the requirement of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church.
The Racial Healing Commission continues to seek ways to improve its work and asks for feedback after each session. Also the Commission is seeking additional trainers for the Dismantling Racism Program and recruiting persons who can assist with the technology for virtual meetings. Training for these positions will be provided. A small stipend will be offered. For more information or to apply for these positions, email Deacon Jan Scholtz, Chair, Racial Healing Commission, jan.scholtz@ janscholtz.com.
